Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic Therapy for Acne

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) combines a topical photosensitizing agent, such as 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), with a specific light source to target sebaceous gland activity and acne-related inflammation.

PDT can produce a temporary sunburn-like reaction, and patients may require specific light-avoidance and post-treatment care following the procedure. The treatment protocol, number of sessions, and suitability depend on the patient’s acne severity and skin characteristics.

Topical acne treatments may also be continued alongside or following laser, light, or device-based treatments where clinically appropriate.
